RoseCrag Genealogy

Genealogy is like a distillery warehouse......lots of secrets hidden in dark corners & containers......and all very intoxicating!

Notes:  Dewey registered for the Draft, 12 September 1918, in Caney, Kansas.  He was living with his mother, Isadora Elam Lebow at 1st & Smith St.s in Caney.  He was a smelting worker at the Wier Smelting Co.  Somewhat ironically, his draft registration lists him as tall, slender, and blue eyed with light hair.  We grandchildren only knew him with coal black hair and hardly a single gray hair at 62 when he died.  He is noted to be a U.S. native born citizen.  Race: white.  There was a box in which he could have checked 'Indian' but was not done so.  Perhaps this would put to rest the rumors that he must have been Indian due to his black hair....which might not have really been so black after all.

Dewey married Julia E. Estes in Caney on 11 February 1919 by a minister whose name is difficult to read on the license, but could be J.M. Mason.  The  name is a bit more legible on a church issued certificate.  Mable C. Lebow and Roy B. Pierce signed this document as witnesses.

On the 1930 census, the family has relocated to Okmulgee, Oklahoma and all four children have been born including:  Douglas 10, Dora 9, Derald 6 & Doris 4.

Grandpa Dewey was the gymnasium manager at the University of Oklahoma the entire time I knew him.  He died when I was 15 (Clay Patterson).  I remember a wonderful man that took me to work at the gym when I would stay with them in Norman, Oklahoma, and I got to hand out towels to the athletes.  Really cool for a young kid.  While never rude to me, he did cuss a bit when drivers irritated him......that and the 'rolling Oklahoma stops' he did at stop signs will always stay in my memory and I think of him when I do some of the same things..
