Register Report

Generation 1

1.

JOSEPH PATTERSON-1. He was born Abt. 1750 in Ireland. He died 1804 in Back Creek, Cecil Co., MD.

Notes for Joseph Patterson:

General Notes: Joseph lived in a very small village on the NE shore of the Chesapeake Bay. There remains a very old Presbyterian Church in the village indicating that this was a Scots-Irish settlement dating back to the early 1700s. The location of Back Creek is definitely in the migration pattern of the early Scots-Irish beginning in Baltimore and traveling over the land bridge north of the Chesapeake into Pennsylvania and then down the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.

Joseph died in 1804. We have his estate inventory from Cecil Co., MD that indicates he was a blacksmith of some substance. No heirs are listed so more research is needed at a later date. Having lived and died in Back Creek, Cecil Co., MD, the location of the canal that was being built, at the time of his death, from Delaware to the Chesapeake, it is possible that Joseph died while working on the construction of the canal.

Joseph is shown on the 1790 census in Back Creek, Cecil Co., MD as being a male over 16, with four males under 16. Three white females are noted. There were no slaves.

Joseph is shown on the 1800 census, also in Back Creek, Cecil Co., MD. He is very likely the male over 45 and the male 26-44 could be his oldest son (who, according to the 1800 census could have been born as early as 1774). The other possibility is that Joseph is 26-44 and the elder gentleman is his father living with him. In addition, there is a male 10-15 who would be one of younger of the four sons listed on the 1790 census. There is also a male under 10 who would be the young Joseph born in 1793. There is a female noted to be under 10 as well.

The disturbing fact is that there is no adult woman listed. While commonplace in those days for a censustaker not to list someone who is not actually in the house that day, it still leaves a gap in the quest for the elder Joseph's wife.

Following the elder Joseph's death in 1804 it would not be surprizing for a young man to strike out for the west when he grew to manhood. If young Joseph is the 16-25 year old on the 1810 census with Elizabeth, he would have from that time till 1818 when he married Rosanne Tewell in Washington Co., KY.

There are a significant number of Patterson families in Cecil Co., MD during this time frame. Further research might make a connection between these families. Many of the first names we find in the descendant families of Joseph and Rosanne are found repeated in these families that remained in Cecil Co. throughout the 19th century, name such as: Joseph, Henry, William, James, Margaret, Thomas, John, Nancy & George.

ELIZABETH. She was born Abt. 1755. She died Aft. 1830 in Cecil Co., MD.

Notes for Elizabeth:

General Notes: While not a certainty that Elizabeth is Joseph Patterson's wife, she is not found independently on the 1800 census. After Joseph's death in 1804, Elizabeth if found in Cecil Co. on the 1820 census with 2 males 16-25, one of which would be young Joseph. Joseph's 1800 census listed one male 10-15 & one male under 10. Both of these males could be 16-25 in 1810. Young Joseph would be 17 and would be the younger of the two boys.

In 1810, Elizabeth is listed as having 1 female 16-25. The elder Joseph, in 1800, had one female under 10 who could easily be over 16 in 1810. The children match the census for both decades.

If there were any discrepancy it would be that no adult woman is shown on Joseph's 1800 census. While this can easily be explained by noting that often people were not enumerated if they were not in the home 'that day', it is still a concern to be considered. There were three white females living with Joseph in 1790.

Elizabeth is shown on the 1820 census as a female over 45, with a male 16-26, male 26-45, female 10-16, and a female 26-45. She is likely living with a son or daughter, their spouse and two children. This census indicates that one person is engaged in agriculture and two are engaged in manufacture. The elder Joseph had a lot of blacksmith equipment in his estate inventory in 1804. It is possible that the two boys and/or the older girl are manufacturing some metal products while the other is in farming or garden production.

On the 1830 census, Elizabeth is still the head of household and indicated as being 70-80 years of age, giving her a birthdate of about 1755. She is living with a female 15-20 and two males 30-40. She is not found on the 1840 census, possibly indicating that she had died.

More research is planned on a trip to Cecil Co. in 2010.

It should be mentioned that there is one other Patterson widow in Cecil Co. on the census in 1810. Her name is Martha and she is the right age, over 45. She has one male 16-25 and this could be our young Joseph who is 17. She also have three femailes, two 16-25 and one under 10. The female numbers don't jive with Jospeh's kids in 1800 but the youngest could be a grandchild. The disturbing factor concerning Martha is that she has two slaves and Joseph had none recorded in either 1790 or 1800.

Notes for Joseph Patterson:

General Notes: Joseph and Rosanna married at St. Rose Catholic Church just outside Springfield, Washington Co., Kentucky. They moved to Daviess Co., Indiana in 1819 with the Tewell family, including Rosanna's brothers, Charles & John & their wives. While Joseph doesn't appear to have any roots in the Washington County area, Rosanna's parents were apparently part of the 'Maryland League', a group of Catholic families who moved to Kentucky, primarily to Nelson and Washington counties. They rode boats and rafts down the Ohio River with most arriving in the 1780s & 1790s. Joseph, an apparent Scots-Irish lad from Maryland, apparently migrated westward from Cecil Co., MD sometime after the death of his father.

In 1820, Martin County is formed including the Joseph Patterson farm. In 1827 Joseph bought 64 acres in Perry Township for $300. Sec. 1, Twp. 3 N, Rg. 5 W. (This land is now located under West Boggs Lake).

There are numerous legends about losing precious china while crossing the Ohio River as well as possible visits of Abraham Lincoln's family as well as Daniel Boone. However, the one most evident is the story of Rosanna pleading on her death bed that Joseph join the Catholic Church. The couple had raised all of their children in the church while Joseph's heritage as a Presbyterian kept him on the outside. Apparently he did join following his wife's plea.

However, another legend is found reported in the Gary Post-Tribune - "The Patterson homestead is a place of interest to students of the life of Abraham Lincoln. The Lincoln's left their old home in Spencer Co., Indiana, and started for Illinois in the spring of 1830. Young Abe was just 21 years of age. the route they followed was the old Buffalo Trail through Daviess Co., and at the close of a cold, rainy day in March, they stopped in front of the Patterson home. The Patterson's welcomed the travellers and made them comfortable for three days, during which time, according to family tradition, young Abe made friends with everybody and wwith eveyr animal on the farm. Whe he went away, he wore a sleeveless coat of the kind known as 'wampus' which one of the Patterson family gave him." Some of this information is from Maurice Healy of Loogootee and Flavian Seal of Washington, IN.

While there seems to be a discrepancy as to whether Joseph was born in Maryland, Virginia or Kentucky....various census through the years are contradictory. I (Clay Patterson) visited have visited all of the Kentucky counties where there were Joseph Pattersons listed in 1800 and 1810. None of those families qualify to be our Joseph's parents.

Of the several Joseph Pattersons in Maryland, only Joseph in Back Creek, Cecil Co., MD fits the requirements to be our Joseph's father. There is no evidence of any connection with Virginia.
